I thought I’d start out the new year by writing a helpful post on goal setting and vision statements for success. Looking back at the previous year, you may be amazed at how all that time flew by. You may be surprised (and a little disappointed) to realize that you’re barely farther along with your big dreams and goals than you were at this time last year.
I’m going to make the assumption that you do in fact have BIG DREAMS AND GOALS. I’m also going to assume that you’re willing and even excited about taking the necessary actions (like goal setting and vision statements) that will lead you in the direction of actually fulfilling those big dreams and goals. This can be done, your dreams can become reality. All you need is some consistent action and time and, oh yeah… a solid plan to get you there.
Anyone that has achieved any great success in life began first with a CLEARLY DEFINED GOAL. The purpose of this post is to lead you through some proven steps to help you clearly define your own goals and then give you some daily actions to help you achieve them. I’m going to lay out the simple yet powerful strategies I’ve begun to use that have had a profound effect on my personal productivity and the results I’ve seen in my life recently. These techniques for goal setting and vision statements are not new and they have been used by perhaps every single big achiever throughout history in one way or another. I’m simply passing them on to you in a clear and simple way to help you achieve your own goals and dreams THIS YEAR.
Imagine having a detailed plan, a road map to reach your destination (i.e., your goals) and being clear each day of the actions you need to complete to get one step closer. You see, contrary to what many Hollywood movies would have you believe, there is rarely ONE BIG PAYOFF, a big heist, gold or treasure for the hero or heroine at the end. It’s more like a gradual and consistent process and small daily progress towards your goal that slowly matures and grows day by day, inch by inch, one step at a time. It’s more like OVERNIGHT SUCCESS IN 365 DAYS. Once you learn to leverage your goal setting and vision statements for success, you will wonder just how much you could have achieved in the past if you had been given a system like this in grade school. Oh well, the past is past, let’s concentrate now on the future.
First, (and this is a big one) begin to develop your MAJOR LIFE GOAL or definite chief aim. The idea of developing a single main life purpose was a huge change for me as I think it is for many people. Instead of jumping from one thing to another or simply drifting along aimlessly, the idea of setting ONE MAIN GOAL has the potential to take you very far in life.
Having a clearly defined life purpose or CONTRIBUTION is probably the most important part of a truly fulfilling life and as well for the development of passion, enthusiasm… and indeed success. This is your life and you can do anything, be anything and have anything you can imagine. Having one single main purpose is a very powerful and motivating force that can move mountains and help propel you to great achievement. If you pursue one main single purpose over a lifetime, you will in time achieve relative mastery over your chosen path and position yourself for massive success. If this is a goal setting concept you never really considered before, it may give you a new perception of your life that will create a shift in your vision of your future. Remember, it’s never too late to dedicate yourself to your definite chief aim. The following tricks to goal setting and vision statements will be a massively helpful tool in helping you achieve your major life goal.
Using goal setting and vision statements is a vital ingredient to your success so make sure you implement them immediately.
Start off with your FIVE YEAR VISION STATEMENT and write it down!
It’s time to expand on your major life goal and begin to explore all the different aspects of what your big life goal will look like just five years in the future. If you haven’t yet honed in on your major life purpose yet, that’s o.k., DO THIS EXERCISE ANYWAY, it will develop over time. If you are experiencing resistance to the idea of having a major life purpose or to creating a five year vision statement, that’s o.k. too. These goal setting and vision statements you create for yourself will be the guiding light to help keep you on track and focused. What you focus on expands. Just realize that time passes quickly and if you don’t begin to implement these “secrets”, you will likely wake up five years from now with no real results to show for it. Life is an incredible gift and you are capable of astounding achievement if you simply get clear on your real purpose in this life and set some tough goals for yourself along the way.
Some things to keep in mind for both your goal setting and vision statements…
- Take your time, this is your life you’re planning out! Write your own story.
- Dream big and be creative, what does your dream life look like?
- Write your vision statement five years in the future and place the date at the top.
- Write it in the present tense: I am…, I have…, there is…, etc…
- Write one paragraph each on personal & spiritual growth, health & fitness, relationships, financial & career, and community.
- Try to keep it to one page… you will READ THIS EVERY DAY!
- Continue to revise your goals and vision statement until it’s in alignment with your true goals and dreams. Remember, this is for you, no one else. What do YOU really want?
Great, now you have begun to put some order in your life. You have begun to develop your major life purpose and you have written out your five year vision statement. If you in fact have these down on paper, you are already miles ahead of everyone else (the majority). Most will continue to blindly stumble along through life without a clear map or even a destination and with dreams and goals unfulfilled. Most are simply not willing to take the time to reflect on their life and plan out their future. Still, many work hard and struggle but are ineffective at achieving their goals simply because they don’t know any better way. Not you. Not anymore.
We are taught many things in school and often much useless knowledge but are not given a blueprint to follow to go about achieving our dreams. We are not taught about goal setting and vision statements to achieve success. This is the real knowledge and the only knowledge that really matters. Make no mistake however, you will have much to do to reach your goals. You will need to work hard consistently and for as long as it takes and you will need to dedicate yourself to the daily task of achieving your big dreams and goals. Don’t worry though, we are only talking about developing a few consistent daily habits that over time create success just as naturally as a small plant grows to bloom as a beautiful flower.
Start out by writing down 2 – 5 goals for each of the following subjects
Write these in the present tense and give each goal A TIME FRAME. Then whittle these down until you have just three main goals for each category. Make sure to develop all the different categories for a balanced life. This will give you a consistent reminder of your various goals throughout the year and help keep you on track.
Next, Take the most important single goal from each category and write them down on a new page… Your TOP TEN GOALS. This is another way to quickly remind yourself of your main goals.
You’re almost there. Now, on yet another page, take your TOP THREE most important goals from your top ten list and write them down. These are your primary goals for the year… JUST THREE GOALS you can really focus on daily.
The three pages you just created will be both your goals and your affirmations. READ THEM DAILY! There is power in repetition. I have mine written out in order on a WORD document so I can easily access them and make subtle changes quickly along the way.
Make sure to take your new skills on goal setting and vision statements and put them to use daily!
EACH DAY, before you do anything else, first read your vision statement aloud and WITH EMOTION. Mentally and emotionally put yourself in the future and FEEL what it’s like to live your dream life and act as if it’s your reality today, right now. Use your creative imagination. Next, read through your goals in the same manner, first your big list, then your top ten, and finish with your primary goals for the year. Write your goals as affirmations… they will have a powerful and positive effect OVER TIME on your passion and excitement and they will empower you to take action every day. This should take less than fifteen minutes a day and will likely be one of the best habits you ever develop. This is the step in the process of developing your goal setting and vision statements where the rubber meets the road, it’s where your big goals and dreams begin to come to life and take form so be sure to make this a consistent habit. If you want to take it up a notch, read through your vision statement and your goals twice each day, once upon rising in the morning and once before you go to sleep at night.
Once you have incorporated the habit of reading your five year vision statement and your yearly goals into your life you will be well on your way to achieving your big dreams and goals. Learning how to properly develop your goal setting and vision statements for success has laid a solid foundation for you to now begin to plan out your days. When you know where you want to get to by the end of the year, you can then decide what it will take to get you there. Plan out your year in quarters, months, weeks and days. Once you do this, you can measure your progress and begin to celebrate the small daily accomplishments. The hardest part now is to simply STICK TO THE SCHEDULE you have created for yourself. If your major life goal and your vision statement are strong enough and incite enough positive emotion, you will be pulled out of bed each morning and passionately driven along toward the completion of your small daily tasks.
I’m not going to go into all the reasons and scientific explanations why the practice of goal setting and vision statements WORKS. You’ve probably read enough already. You don’t even need to take my word for it. Just know that anyone that has achieved any amazing results in their life first became very clear about what they most desired. They kept this overriding desire at the forefront of their thoughts and took action with focus and consistent effort towards the achievement of that goal. This outline I have given you is a powerful way to get clear about your desires, dreams and goals, and keep them front and center in your life through daily repetition. This repetition will slowly begin to align your conscious and unconscious minds to begin to work together in harmony toward the achievement of your goals.
I hope you now have a new way to look at achieving you big goals and dreams and come away with some actionable steps you can take TODAY to begin to get very clear about where you’re going in life. I hope you will in fact TAKE ACTION on these time tested goal setting and vision statements for success to achieve all your wildest goals and dreams.
